RiverWire Cable Lore — The Codex

A record of the terms, relics, ingredients, and lore of The Vale.

The World

The Vale

The valley on Aelthas where The Forge's mountain stands.

Aelthas

The continent on which The Forge stands. The Vale sits within it.

Tuwen

A continent apart from Aelthas, known above all for its forests — wider, denser, and older than any other on record. The Sanctuary stands somewhere within them.

The Forge

RiverWire's workshop, on the mountain in The Vale. The river runs up the mountain and through the area where the forge stands. Travelers arrive here to commission relics.

RiverWire

The forge on Aelthas, named for the river that runs up the mountain through the forge and the wire shaped within it. Travelers bring rare ingredients to RiverWire; the forge receives these materials and shapes them into relics.

The Empyreal

A vanished civilization of great wisdom, elegance, and power — unmatched in both mechanics and magic. Nations sent gifts hoping to earn their favor. Few were ever graced with their presence. Then, without warning or trace, they were gone. Their cities remain. Their metals do not rust. Their lights never dim. Their inscriptions have never been translated. No one knows what happened to them.

The Sanctuary of Tuwen

A hidden chamber discovered in the deep forests of Tuwen when an adventurer reflected Empyreal crystal light against a hidden waterfall. Inside stood a mirror-like construct surrounded by skeletons frozen mid-reach, as if trying to touch its surface. One held a shard of brass-like metal. Restored to the mirror, it opened a portal beyond comprehension. Many expeditions entered. Only one returned. Those who survived spoke in an unknown tongue and carried sketches of floating mirrors suspended across space. The cave was ultimately collapsed and sealed beneath stone and time.

The Mountain / The Twin Peaks

The Forge stands high on one mountain. Its twin stands on the exact opposite side of the world — nearly identical in shape and legend, the two peaks anchored at the world's farthest poles. Few have laid eyes on both. Those who climb the wrong one meet the Titans instead. Scholars have long whispered that the two mountains share a hidden tether — a current of power flowing beneath the world itself. One creates. The other destroys.

The City Below

A kingdom lost to time and darkness, buried far deeper than any earth-dweller city. History records only a handful of survivors — citizens who escaped a terrible fate. They spoke of a cult-like society, twisted in its devotion, yet a marvel the world will never see again. Its fall began when its king discovered Lunafen Copper.

The Gateway City

Boston, Massachusetts, in the human realm. The crossing point between RiverWire's world and the world of human builders. The Gateway City is the trade outpost through which relics reach the hands that need them. The outpost was established in partnership with Judge Amps of Somerville.

Judge Amps

The workshop of Bob Judge — amp smith of Somerville, in the human realm — and the partner who helped establish The Gateway City as RiverWire's trade outpost. Judge builds custom amps and pedals. His hand in the founding of the outpost is recorded in the lore by the Judge Amps Cable, a relic imbued with Harlock Leaves from The Forge's own mountain.

The Harlock Tree

A tree that grows on The Forge's mountain, known for its striking purple fallen leaves. The leaves carry natural toxin resistance properties — a detail the mountain's smiths have known for a long time, and one that found its way into the Judge Amps Cable.

People & Beings

Traveler

Anyone who arrives at The Forge bearing ingredients. Travelers come from far and near, and in rarer cases from the human realm by way of The Gateway City.

Forgemaster Ven

The head smith of The Forge. Not the master of RiverWire — the master of the forge floor. The one who decides when a relic is ready to leave and when it needs to be done again. Every cable that leaves The Forge has passed through Ven's hands.

The Titans

Ancient beings of immense power who inhabit the mountain opposite The Forge. Some say they carved the continents. Others say they are descendants of those who forged the stars. Their strength defies measure — a single strike could level mountains, their voices alone enough to shake the oceans. They are not hostile by nature. But those who climb their mountain seeking The Forge rarely return unchanged.

The Sentinel

The Forge stands high on one mountain. Its twin stands on the exact opposite side of the world — nearly identical in shape and legend, the two peaks anchored at the world's farthest poles. Few have laid eyes on both. Those who climb the wrong one meet the Titans instead. Scholars have long whispered that the two mountains share a hidden tether — a current of power flowing beneath the world itself. One creates. The other destroys.

The King

The unnamed monarch of The City Below who discovered Lunafen Copper and was consumed by it. He forged a crown from it. His mind began to fracture. In his final obsession, he ordered the remaining Lunafen melted and injected into his veins, believing it would let him commune with the moon itself. He did not survive. The city did not survive what came next.

The Nomadic Serpents

Wandering beings who shape eyeglasses from black sand — the only instrument through which Cosmic Shards can be clearly seen. Their origin, purpose, and nature are unknown. They appear in the lore only at this intersection: the moment a traveler needs to find what cannot otherwise be found.

The Scholars

Those who have spent their lives chasing the legends — hunting the Sentinel, attempting to translate Empyreal inscriptions, mounting expeditions into the Sanctuary of Tuwen. None have captured what they sought. Those who tried rarely returned unchanged.

The Ingredients

Every relic forged at RiverWire begins with what the traveler brings. These are the ingredients — the materials, the fragments, the things that crossed the world before they ever reached The Forge.

Cosmic Fragments

Shards of a star torn from the heavens in the age of legends — pulled down by desperate will, shattered on impact, scattered far and wide. They surface in riverbeds, trade among travelers, and sit on the shelves of royalty. They grow warm when storms pass and pulse near firelight. To find them clearly, you must look through an eyeglass shaped by the Nomadic Serpents from black sand. Through it, a faint green twinkle shimmers in the distance. Ingredient of The Wayfarer Cable.

Warden’s Bane

A blade infected by the Sentinel's black sword — once bright steel, now darkened by a creeping corruption that spreads as though the black blade infected the metal itself. If brought to The Forge in time, the corruption can be stabilized and its strange resonance harnessed: dark, magnetic, alive. Ingredient of The Sentinel Cable.

Lunafen Copper

A rare strain of metal unearthed in The City Below — said to pulse whenever the moon shines above. The king of that city forged a crown from it and lost his mind. In his final obsession he had it melted into his veins. He did not survive. The city did not long survive either. What came out of the shadows that night was made of living Lunafen — impervious to weapon and flame. Those who carry this ingredient to The Forge are not asked how they got it out of the ruins. When it touches the forge it begins to glow beneath the night sky. This is Lunar Madness — what the copper costs the bearer to carry it that far. Ingredient of The Runeforged Cable.

Aether Whispers

Fragments of the Empyreal mirror. Unlike all other known fragments, the piece brought to The Forge appears to have come from the mirror on the other side of the portal. No one has been able to explain how that is possible. Ingredient of The Empyreal Cable.

VoidHeart

A fragment of pure void — darkness given physical form, embedded in the shield of a figure who returned from a realm where even time refused to follow. It does not reflect, absorb, or radiate. It consumes. Those who stand near it report a thinning in their thoughts. The traveler who brought this arrived at The Forge without casting a shadow. Nothing was said about it. Ingredient of The Oblivion Cable.

Harlock Leaves

The purple fallen leaves of the Harlock Tree, which grows on The Forge's mountain. Long known to the smiths for their natural toxin resistance properties. Imbued into the Judge Amps Cable in celebration of the partnership between RiverWire and Judge Amps. Ingredient of The Judge Amps Cable.

The Relics

Each relic forged at RiverWire carries the story of what it was made from. Hand-assembled, made to order. No two are exactly alike.

The Wayfarer Cable

For the pathfinder unafraid of the unknown. Forged from Cosmic Fragments — shards of a fallen star. When the relic was wrought, the gathered shards began to tremble and a haze of green mist rose above The Forge. Within it, fleeting shapes took form — constellations, maps, perhaps a celestial language — before fading back into the dark.

The Sentinel Cable

For those who stand fast when even light wavers. Forged from Warden's Bane — a blade infected by the Sentinel's cursed sword. The blackened metal, when tempered with precision and resolve, yields a strange resonance. Dark. Magnetic. Alive. One patron claimed that while holding it, the relic began to form an object they had envisioned in their mind.

The Runeforged Cable

For those who create under strange light. Forged from Lunafen Copper — the moon-pulsing metal of The City Below. When the fragment touched The Forge it began to glow beneath the night sky. A strange clarity filled the room. One of the apprentices had to be stopped from climbing a tree to reach the moon. Be wary of moonlight. What will it ask of you when it finds its reflection?

The Titanforged Cable

For the one who wields the strength of storms. Forged by harnessing Divine Impact — the energy of a Titan's direct blow. History records only one who tried the ritual before this relic existed. When the strike fell there was no scream, no echo. Only a red mist, scattered to the wind. Will you attempt the climb?

The Empyreal Cable

For the dreamer chasing the echoes of lost worlds. Forged from Aether Whispers — a fragment of the Empyreal mirror from the other side of the portal. Many expeditions entered the Sanctuary. Only one returned. Those who survived spoke in an unknown tongue. If removing a piece deactivates the portal — how did you even manage to come back?

The Oblivion Cable

For the one unafraid to shape darkness itself. Forged from VoidHeart — a fragment of pure void. To manipulate it, a hammer had to be made from the artifact itself. Nothing else would touch it. When the final strike fell, whispers echoed from the flames — faint, pleading, and not in any known tongue. Among the ashes lay a tiny fragment. It was encased in a heavily warded gold enclosure. Every creation yearns to meet its maker. Will it serve you — or will you serve it?
